There once was a lovely family with three children.
한때 세 명의 아이를 둔 사랑스러운 가족이 있었습니다.
The children were very close.
아이들은 매우 사이가 좋았습니다.
But as they got older, they slowly grew apart.
하지만 아이들이 자라면서 서서히 멀어졌습니다.
One day, the parents called the children together.
어느 날 부모는 아이들을 한자리에 불렀습니다.
“Do you remember this room?”
“이 방을 기억하니?”
“You used to play here.
“너희는 여기서 놀곤 했지.
It was always filled with happiness,” said the father.
“이 방은 항상 행복으로 가득했단다.”라고 아버지가 말했습니다.
The mother continued.
어머니가 말을 이었습니다.
“But now, you don’t even talk to each other.”
“하지만 이제는 서로 이야기조차 하지 않는구나.”
“So, we made a puzzle for you.
“그래서 너희를 위한 퍼즐을 하나 만들었단다.
Here are three silver coins.
여기에 은화 세 개가 있다.
Go to the market and buy something to fill this room completely.”
시장에 가서 이 방을 완전히 채울 무언가를 사 오너라.
If you succeed, you will get a big reward.
성공하면 큰 보상을 받을 거야.
Ethan, the eldest child, said,
맏이인 이든이 말했습니다.
“We will do our best.”
“우리는 최선을 다할 거예요.”
The youngest of the family, Annie, was puzzled.
가족 중 막내 애니는 혼란스러워했습니다.
“Three silver coins aren’t enough to fill this room.”
“은화 세 개로는 이 방을 채울 수 없어요.”
The father replied,
아버지가 대답하셨습니다.
“If you work together, you can figure it out.
“함께 힘을 합치면 해결할 수 있단다.
Three heads are better than one.”
세 사람이 한 사람보다 낫단다.
Patrick, the middle child, shouted,
둘째 패트릭이 외쳤습니다.
“I know the answer!”
“정답을 알아요!”
He grabbed a silver coin and ran out the door.
그는 은화 하나를 움켜쥐고 문 밖으로 달려 나갔습니다.
Patrick returned after he bought two bags of feathers from the market.
패트릭은 시장에서 깃털 두 자루를 사서 돌아왔습니다.
He began to fill the room with feathers, but they barely covered the floor.
그는 방을 깃털로 채우기 시작했지만 바닥만 겨우 덮을 뿐이었습니다.
Ethan said to Patrick,
이든이 패트릭에게 말했습니다.
“Why did you act on your own?”
“왜 혼자서 행동했니?”
Patrick dropped his head.
패트릭은 고개를 숙였습니다.
“I’m sorry. I thought I knew the answer.”
“미안해요. 제가 답을 안다고 생각했어요.”
Annie sighed.
애니는 한숨을 쉬었습니다.
“Now we only have two coins left.”
“이제 동전이 두 개밖에 안 남았어.”
The children went to the market together.
아이들은 함께 시장에 갔습니다.
Patrick had another idea.
패트릭은 또 다른 생각이 있었습니다.
“How about straw?”
“짚은 어때?”
It is cheaper than feathers, but it takes up more space.
짚은 깃털보다 싸지만 더 많은 공간을 차지해.
Ethan said, “Great idea!
이든이 말했습니다. “좋은 생각이야!
But let’s only use one coin for now.”
하지만 지금은 동전 하나만 쓰자.”
“Good thinking!
“좋은 생각이야!
That way, we can play it safe,” said Annie.
그러면 안전하게 할 수 있잖아.”라고 애니가 말했습니다.
Ethan continued,
이든이 말을 이었습니다.
“If straw is not the answer, we will have one more chance with the last coin.”
만약 짚이 답이 아니라면 마지막 동전으로 한 번 더 기회가 있어.
They returned home with six bundles of straw.
그들은 짚 여섯 묶음을 가지고 집으로 돌아왔습니다.
The straw came up to their knees, but it wasn’t enough.
짚은 무릎까지 쌓였지만 충분하지 않았습니다.
Ethan said,
이든이 말했습니다.
“We need to think differently.
“우리는 다르게 생각해야 해.
How about water?”
물은 어때?”
Patrick said,
패트릭이 말했습니다.
“The water would just leak out of the room.”
물은 그냥 방 밖으로 새어 나갈 거야.
Perhaps the answer isn’t something physical after all.
아마도 답은 물리적인 것이 아닐지도 몰라.
Annie yelled,
애니가 외쳤습니다.
“That’s it! I know the answer.”
“바로 그거야! 내가 답을 알았어.”
Let’s go to the market again.
다시 시장에 가자.
When they got back home, Annie took a candle out of her bag.
집에 돌아왔을 때 애니는 가방에서 촛불을 꺼냈습니다.
The candle was lit by Patrick, and the entire room was filled with light.
패트릭이 촛불에 불을 붙이자 방 전체가 빛으로 가득 찼습니다.
The mother yelled excitedly,
어머니가 흥분해서 외쳤습니다.
“You solved the puzzle!”
“너희가 퍼즐을 풀었구나!”
Now they could see drawings on the wall.
이제 그들은 벽에 그려진 그림들을 볼 수 있었습니다.
“Look! That’s us! Our family!” said Annie.
“봐! 저게 우리야! 우리 가족이야!”라고 애니가 말했습니다.
Patrick said,
패트릭이 말했습니다.
“I remember these drawings.
“이 그림들이 기억나.
They were drawn by us when we were little.”
우리가 어렸을 때 우리가 그린 그림이야.”
Ethan turned to his parents.
이든은 부모님을 향해 돌아섰습니다.
“Now I understand.
“이제 알겠어요.
The greatest reward in the world is my family.”
세상에서 가장 큰 보상은 가족이에요.
